Bad habits

Multiple habits are included in the category of bad habits. One of the large groups is childhood dummy use and sucking of fingers, due to which the appropriate development of sets of teeth and jawbone is prevented and due to this, an orthodontic deformation extended to certain teeth or group of teeth, in more severe cases a deformation of the jawbone and hence a more severe bite deformation may emerge.

In case of bad habits of this type, parental attention and care play a prominent role, on the one hand so that the child could give it up as soon as possible, on the other hand so that he could be examined by an orthodontic dentist as soon as possible.

The other large group is the inappropriate, infantile swallowing, which may emerge in any age group. It means a reverse swallow in most frequent cases. In case of a normal swallow, we push our tongue upward, to the palate, while those with a reverse swallow push their tongue forward, between the sets of teeth in case of swallowing, which means the teeth lean outward and an open bite emerges. If the problem is not treated, it means a risk even following the orthodontic treatment, the teeth may move back.

May it be present either in child- or adulthood, the inappropriate swallowing is treated by a specialized speech-language pathologist, even if the patient has no speech disorders. The patient must learn various practices and practice them as long as his swallowing does not switch to the normal function.
